Raja (Kunal) is from a very poor, illiterate family, from Tamil Nadu (in the Hindi version he is from Allahabad). People from his region consider that “education is meant only for the rich”. There, poor boys are made to work from age 5, either at factories or farms, so that they can support their families. But, Raja’s mother forced his father to let Raja study up-to class 2, without any work. But he refuses to fund him, and orders him to start work as accountant for their landlord. Raja’s dad is violent and an alcoholic. He spends the family’s income on alcohol. Raja’s family struggles to work hard everyday. Raja’s mom begs him to move to Mumbai to start a new life. Raja heeds his mom’s pleas and moves to Mumbai to attend Ramachandra Institute of Management Studies, the top-most premier b-school in India. The movie starts off at a train station on New Year Day, 1999. Raja talks with a person (Manivannan in the Tamil version, Anupam Kher in the Hindi version) who was well-wishing him. Due to insistence, Raja goes into a flash back. 3 years ago, he reaches Mumbai, where he plans to get admitted into the prestigious Ramachandra College of management, one of the most premier institutes in the nation.

Azhagi
Shanmugam (Parthiban), a veterinary doctor, lives in the city with his wife Valarmati (Devayani) and their two children. In school, Shanmugam was in love with his classmate Dhanalakshmi (Nandita Das), but fate had forced them to go their separate ways, with Dhanam being forced to wed her brother-in-law (Sayaji Shinde). One day, Shanmugam spots Dhanam, who, having lost her husband, now lives a life of poverty on the platforms with her son Balu. After an unsuccessful attempt to find her a job in a friend’s house, he hires her as their servant-maid. However, memories of the past start to create a tension between Shanmugam and Dhanam, despite their attempts to maintain a distance.
One day, Valarmati finds out from Shanmugam’s old classmates how they both were in love when they were young, and she starts fearing that Shanmugam will leave her and her children for Dhanam. Valarmati becomes so distraught that she even humiliates Dhanam at a party organized by one of their friends. When they return home, Valarmati confronts Shanmugam, and an argument ensues. Dhanam overhears their argument and silently goes to bed. The next morning, Dhanam and Balu are nowhere to be found. When Shanmugam searches the house, he finds a letter written by Dhanam saying that she wants Valarmati and Shanmugam to be happy and that she doesn’t want to come between them. Soon, Valarmati realizes the truth and wants to bring Dhanam back home and ask her for her forgiveness.

Kurai Ondrum Illai
Kuraiondrumillai is a heart-warming love story which deals with interpersonal relationship issues encompassing a subtle social message and economic developmental possibilities in rural India. Krishna (Hero) is an optimist who sees positives in every situation yet has a deep hidden wounds from his past relationship. Sandhya (Heroine) is a sensitive girl whose heart desire to find a true companion but she fears choosing a wrong person. When they meet each other and fall in love they understand the basics of relationship. Krishna’s relationship issues with sandhya and resistance from his higher officials to execute his ideas in rural projects takes him through a transformational experience.

Idhayam
Raja, an introvert medical student falls in love with his fellow college mate, Geeta, but does not have courage to express his love to her. When he decides to convey his love, then he misunderstands that Geeta is in love with someone else but in fact she was helping her sister and her lover to unite. Her father does not accept her sister’s love and the pair commit suicide.
Towards the end of the final year of college, he finally conveys his love to Geetha when she is in the college mourning her sister’s death. On the last day of college, Raja comes to know that the Geetha is about to be engaged soon to someone else, he couldn’t cope with the news and suffers a mild heart stroke and gets hospitalized. In the mean time Geetha starts falling in love with Raja, she visits the hospital to express her love only to find Raja has left to catch a train to his native village. She rushes to the railway station and searches for him, she finds her father on the way and her father accepts her love, she finds Raja’s friend Chinni instead and will come to know of Raja’s heart condition that he cannot digest a very happy or sad news. Chinni urges Geetha not to meet Raja then and promises after Raja recuperates, he will unite them. The film ends as Geetha looks at the departing train.
