The film begins with a narration on how India has been turned into a landfill site for domestic and foreign countries, with the countries dumping even ammunition waste onto Indian soil. In Delhi, Balusamy, aka Balu (Arya), a communist leader, is convicted by the court on counts of robbery, murder and treason is given death sentence. Despite Balu’s request to execute him as a martyr by shooting, the court orders that he be hanged within a month’s time by a professional executioner or hangman. He is escorted to a high security prison complex in Chennai by Macaulay (Shaam), an honest, law abiding police officer who is given the charge of monitoring him until his execution. The prison provides freedom to all prisoners, including Balu, to do whatever they want, as long as they do not cause unrest. Balu is instantly admired by the inmates for his patriotism and philosophy as well as his empathy with the inmates. They view him as a spokesperson to the prison officials on behalf of them.

Before dying at the hands of a criminal, a police officer swears that he will return as a reincarnation to seek revenge. Consequently, fate brings together his twin sons who were separated at birth.

Patra tells the story of an innocent youth who gets caught between the politics of two gangsters and how smartly he overcomes the same. This is an action-thriller that promises an explosive climax.

Meanwhile, Amavasai falls in love with Thayamma (Kasthuri) and one day he gives her some drug making her groggy and then rapes her. Mani instructs Amavasai to stand for MLA election as independent candidate in the upcoming general election with his support as Mani was not given his party ticket. Amavasai wins by a huge margin and becomes the MLA. He forgets his relationship with Thayamma and rejects her pregnancy and child. Thayamma and her parents move out of that village to avoid humiliation. Soon Thayamma gives birth to a boy and dies. Amavasai forgets Mani’s help and forces him in a role under him. He changes his name to Nagaraja Cholan for gaining social status. He marries the only daughter of the rich local landlord, Sivakami (Sujatha) and even cheats him of his palace. Over the years, Amavasai grows into a highly influential and corrupt politician with high criminal affluence. He builds a strong political empire through shortcuts. His ego and pride to remain in power make him kill many. He wins and remains as MLA of Palladam in all the general elections for next 20 years.
Now, Amavasai’s son Thangavel (also Sathyaraj) through Thayamma comes out as a new police constable, who is deputed in Amavasai’s constituency. Thangavel is betrothed to a beautiful +2 studying girl Kuyili. They both fall in love. But during the official wedding engagement, a dispute arises over the people asking about his father’s identity and the wedding is cancelled. He asks his grandparents about his father, but they remain silent. So he accuses his mother to be a slut, and his granddad bashes him and tells all about Ammavasai. Thangavel now comes to know of his real father and about his betrayal of his mother and also his corrupt practices. The state assembly is about to be dissolved prior to general elections. But the ruling party leadership does not wish to give a seat to Amavasai again, as he has minimal chances of winning, due to his corruption, illegal activities as MLA. So he invokes a cruel caste riot in his constituency and pretends to stop it. So he is given the ticket again. Thangavel is posted as riot police head constable to stop riots and to protect Ammavasai. He saves Ammavasai from an assassination attempt. He then goes to Ammavasai’s house and reveals his identity. He challenges his father that he will stop all of his illegal activities. Then Thangavel gets posted as Law and Order Sub-Inspector in the same area. The story further revolves around how Amavasai and Thangavel proceed in their battle and finally who wins the battle.

The story revolves around a mother-son relationship set in Kodaikanal. The movie commences with Rama Krishna (Jiiva) and his mother Saradha (Saranya Ponvannan), a school teacher, lying in a pool of blood. The police finds that Raam is still alive and arrests him on charges of murdering his mother. Police Inspector Umar (Rahman) works on the case. The story is narrated in a flashback. Raam is a mentally affected teenager (later diagnosed as autistic) living dependent on his mother. His overcompulsive adoration for her lands her in various problems. Raam is provoked easily and tolerates little wrongdoing around him. Next door lives Karthikayeni (Gajala), the daughter of a Sub-Inspector Malaichamy (Murali). She falls for Raam, but upon telling him how she feels, gets a blunt response from him. One day, Saradha is found brutally murdered. Umar grills each and every person connected to her and Raam. Every possible motive Raam might have for murdering his mother is explored. Raam’s neighbors, Malaichamy, and his children are summoned by Umar for interrogation. The police eventually find out that it was Karthika’s brother Satish (Kunal Shah) who committed the murder, fearing Saradha would tell his parents about his drug addiction. When Umar confronts Satish and forces him to surrender, Satish fatally wounds him and escapes, injuring his father in the process. On finding her brother’s hideout, Karthika tries to plead with him to surrender, but he refuses to do so and ties her up. Raam, seeking vengeance, finds the hideout. A brutal fight occurs between the two, and Raam kills Satish. The film ends as the police find the hideout while Raam is meditating on a dilapidated roof.
